TDS 1/1 G.B.L Lathe cross slide feedscrew replacement.
I had a go at replacing the feedscrew on my Viceroy last weekend, it all went pretty well. The cross slide play is now about .005" maximum, fore and aft, but it takes a fair amount of pressure to get that figure.
I made a new collar to retain the screw, and put two 4mm grub screws in it, that made assembly a lot easier. I was worried about getting the locking pin in straight, I needn't have worried, the original one wasn't in straight anyway.
You have to lower the apron to get the new screw in because the thrust collar won't pass by the cross slide drive gear, with the apron screws removed and the apron casting moved a fraction off line the screw slides in easily.
I noticed the new thrust bearing was slightly thicker than the original because there is a slightly larger gap between the setting dial and the saddle body. Perhaps the old bearing was worn ?
I took some pictures to help anybody else doing the same job.
