Viceroy 280VS Synchro - Headstock and Nylon Gear/Users/peter
I have a Viceroy Lathe 280VS Synchro with mechanical speed control. It has sheared teeth on the 68T Nylon gear on the hollow headstock shaft. I have been doing some searching on this forum and note that I am not alone. A few people have made new gears out of Delrin/Acetal - something I am prepared to do using my mill and a friends's lathe!

However, I am seeking some advice on how I remove the gear. I am hoping not to have to disturb the double row tapered bearings in the chuck end and then have the problem of pre-loading them on reassembly. I was hoping that I could slide the shaft out from left to right without dismantling too much - or am I being too hopeful? In which case, how do I remove the internal belt drive and the other gubbins to get that nylon gear out?

Any pointers would be most welcome. Also, does anyone have a 12DP involute cutter (20 degree pressure angle) for loan or sale please.

I think(!) I have attached a couple of photos to aid clarity,

Regards,

You are probably best sending a private message to the 2 guys who posted about making replacement gears - a lot of people only look on here regularly when they have a problem......

Admin - this post would best be moved to the Viceroy section, I think.

Hi Peter.

Andy is right I only pop in here once in a blue moon.

To remove that gear you have to pull the spindle out of the headstock - it comes out to the right and it's a devil to get out (or mine was).

I have the single-point cutter I made to make my own gears. If you have a mill and a dividing head I would lend you my cutter so long as you send it back afterwards.

Pete.
