Can you please check 6 things :-

1. Have you selected the correct machine? this should be a Compact NS (NS = NEXT STEP this is the control board reference). The name of the machine will be on the top blue banner at the top of your monitor. If it is the wrong machine. Select SETUP from the top menu bar then SETUP MACHINE PARAMETERS then the password is denny. Navigate to the Compact NS and right mouse click and select as CURRENT MACHINE

2. Is the cable you have BLACK with SILVER 9 and 25 way connectors?

3. In BIOS can you check that the COM ports are set as follows

COM 1 - 3F8H IRQ4
COM 2 - 2F8H IRQ3

4. In BIOS there seems to be for some reason various types of RS232 COM Port set up. We in the past have had to select different set ups to get the COMMs to work correctly

5. Have you selected the right machine?

The selected machine is shown in the blue title bar of the VR Milling application - for example mine say "Virtual Reality CNC Milling - ROUTERNS". It is important that the selected machine matches the actual machine. As he has it running on a laptop OK then just compare the two.
Look in the help file for information to change the "active machine"
6. Have you got the right COM port selected?
For DenStep type machines you can right-click on the 'Machine' button (the one you normally use to initiate the link to he machine with) and select "Search for Machine" from the pop-up menu.
For NextStep machines you do not need to select the COM port - the software will automatically search all COM ports available
