New To Me TDS 1 (LS)

Post by Fiddler » Wed 29 Jul , 2020 9:06 am

Hi All ....First visit here hello and go easy on me, I may ask some dumb questions, coz I'm really new to the world of lathes.

Just acquired a Viceroy and first issue is there is no final drive belt. I have taken the backplate off the headstock and it looks like it will be a swine to thread a new one through and over the top of spindle pulley without it hanging up on the back gear selector ? Other issue is there a dead size V belt known for this model ? (assuming the lower pulleys haven't been messed with). I was also wandering has anyone ever thought of cutting an inspection/access hatch in top of headstock casting and inserting a bolt down plate ? Do you think it would affect the overall integrity of the headstock in terms of load and the stresses put upon it ?

Thanks In Advance

Fiddler

EDIT:

Have attached some photo's. One to illustrate the hatch idea and the others for any of you guys to spot anything that doesn't look standard. I did wonder about the bolt to the tumble gear lever ? Should that be a spring loaded type pin similar to back gear selector on front ? With a ball end ?

The nutlink belt in the pic is perfectly good to replace like for like. To make threading it round easy get some string and stick it onto the pulley with a dab of grease then it will carry the end round where you can grab it. Tie the string to the new belt and pull it round. It's fiddly but it is do-able.

On those lathes the thin casting of the cross-slide is prone to warping. You might want to check how flat it is.

Thanks for suggestion Pete and you were right. When a day passed without a reply I had a go and managed to feed through some 0.8mm mig wire. So that is sitting in there to hook new belting on to. I would still be interested on people's thoughts about cutting in a top inspection hatch.
I will also check cross slide as you suggest.

My own opinion is don't cut a hatch in the top. Denford made the box headstock for rigidity, so don't alter it, unless you are happy with a lathe that might not perform as well as its makers intended.

Thanks for your opinion RP. It wasn't just going to be a hatch as such, I was planning on adding in something which would hopefully become as one again when bolted down but I understand where you are coming from, sometimes cutting releases/adds stresses strains that are difficult to recover from.
I have never seen a manual for this lathe but I wonder if there was any mention of running the lathe under load with the headstock back plate removed ? As though it is vital to be in place for the structural integrity to be maintained ? Again I'm not so sure as there is a rib cast in place just behind it ? ( the one which restricts access to spindle pulley etc).

When I have it running again I might experiment with that idea, providing there is a Viceroy graveyard somewhere to pick up another headstock ?

I cannot see any harm coming from that, though I don't know why you would want to.

I saw this pic on lathes.co.uk which does not have the casting rib blocking access/ restricting view of spindle.
The model without that rib looks like the plain turning spec and obviously with the screwcutting model they added the rib for a reason which I can only assume to add to the rigidity required for the addition of the change gears. Anyway it just got me thinking that it would be better overall to be able to see the spindle without obstruction and also make it easier to thread belts.

You seem very keen to do this modification, but why? Because it makes it easier to thread belts? You've threaded the belt now, so it will probably renewing in about 20 years? So you can see the spindle? Why do you need to see the spindle?

All I can say is that if I was looking to buy a lathe, I'd walk away from one that had had its headstock cut around as you propose.

Fair enough mate. Why ? Sometimes I just get things in my head that I want to try/do. I'm a fiddler :lolol:

Some things I have done have improved certain items and others haven't particularly but I still enjoy the process.

Does anyone have any more details or photograph of these parts ?

Part Number ML100/202 - Levelling screw
Part Number SP.134 - Locking stud

Hi Andy I did try the search first in the "Viceroy" section but no results for either.

Thanks

This lathe is missing the grease nipples from either end of headstock. Concerned that bearings might be bone dry but it appears someone has managed to lube them in some way. Not 100% sure but is that smaller port the outlet for the grease nipple IE: are they connected ? I presume the nipple is a drive fit ?

Thought I would post a few pics of my countershaft arrangement as it isn't like the one that has adjustment for belt tension. (As per plan pic)
I took it out as I had convinced myself there must be some form of adjustment I just can't see it. Anyway there isn't.
The cast brackets are bolted through from under tray.
Knowing this might save somebody some time.
For now I'm leaving as is but will in the future probably make some sort of tensioning mechanism and will upload some pics of that when I do.

You have included a drawing of the countershaft assembly. Is that available for download from this website? I've looked everywhere but can't find it.

Hey PZY sorry haven't replied to this sooner but had no notification and just happened to have a look in here. Anyway you probably may have found it by now but if not I do have it but can't attach as says file too big. I have tried to find a link to it on the forum as I got it from here originally but no luck. It is a 35 page pdf titled "Mixed Denford Model Drawings" and the drawing you require is ML100/600 which is on page 7 of that pdf. Ask the admins if they still have it or if I can upload here in some other way ?

Hi
Don't worry about the grease nipples. Just put some grease into the bearing, but not too much. Use a small syringe or similar.
