translation gear set for 280 synchro to cut imperialon metric lathe

Post by bigd21 » Wed 05 Feb , 2020 20:34 pm

in a recent edition of model engineers workshop Richard Wilson carried out a review of a synchro 280,
In the review he mentioned that he had been able to source drawings for what he is calling a translation gear set to enable imperial threads to be cut on metric lathe from this forum , my question is does anyone know where these drawings are hiding , any comments much appreciated

Hardware/Software: None. I own a pre CNC Denford 280 Synchro lathe.

Hi
The translation gear set you mention is a complete unit comprising carrier, 127/135 gear and various other gears. The standard Denford set up enables you to cut most imperial threads from 4TPI to 28 TPI. I cut an additional 3 gears, 24T, 26T and 27T which extends the range up to 56TPI.
The drawings you need are:-

1) Carrier (iron casting) Drg BVS 114/1B
2) 48T gear Drg BVS114/2
3) 48T gear Drg BVS 114/3
4) Spacer Drg BVS 114/4
5) Intermediate stud Drg ML114/3
6) 127/135T Change wheel Drg ML 114/9
7)48Tgear Drg ML114/10
8)49T gear Drg ML114/13
9)Spacing bush Drg ML105/113
10) 48T Change wheel Drg 105/127
11) 52T Change wheel Drg 105/128
12) 54T Change wheel Drg 105/129
13) 24T change wheel Drg 105/121 (26 and 27T gears similar, just change diameter and teeth numbers.)

There is a supplementary sheet, which I don't have the number for, which shows the arrangement in place on the lathe.

You will find most if not all of these drawings in the various drawing archives on this site.

As you can see, there are a fair number of gears, and I invested in a Vertex dividing head for the job, which was money well spent IMHO.

Don't be afraid to ask if you have any more questions.

Regards

Richard Wilson

I wonder if something like the electronic lead screw could be a viable alternative http://www.autoartisans.com/ELS/ . Searching for 'electronic lead screw' also now turns up at least one other similar project. The ELS project has been around for some years now and I would expect it to be good and sorted, I have no need of it as I have a Harrison M300 which natively does inch and metric with the caveat that while metric threading on an inch lead screw as mine is you can't disengage the half nuts but that's not an issue as you simply reverse the spindle with the spindle direction control, same caveat if you have a metric lead screw and want to cut inch threads. I don't think they use the exact 100/127 conversion but rather use one of the very near conversion ratios. It may be worth investigating some of the spreadsheets that work out very near conversions with the chain of gears you have maybe with the additions of a few other gears. I've seen mention of them on a few forums but no need to investigate further myself as the scope on the M300 covers everything I'm likely to ever need.

I have a spare casting (unmachined) and compound gear pair if anyone would like to buy them
Send me a p.m. if interested.
