Viceroy 250 help.

Post by E.Smith » Wed 02 Oct , 2013 11:20 am

Hi all, have just bought this lathe second hand, it is running 3 phase motor on a single phase convertor.
I have problems with the finishing on ally, using good tips etc. Does anybody have a diagram of the set up for the gear placement and number of teeth for each as it should be set for good quality finish turning?
Thank you.

Hi 'E' (you haven't given us your name...),

I guess you are asking about power feed settings...
So my first question would be, can you get a good finish using hand feed?
If not, what cutting speed are you using?
Have you cleaned the lathe at all? - for example is there swarf trapped under the saddle or in the slides?
Are the gibs adjusted correctly?
And are the tips you have actually intended for ally? Most tips will be wrecked on ally as they just get a built-up edge in seconds.

A photo or two might help to diagnose the problems too.

If you are used to getting good finishes with the same tips on another manual lathe then I would check the headstock bearings and adjust the gibs carefully. Otherwise, tell us what inserts you are using.

Hi
I had problems with finish when I first brought my Viceroy. It was all my fault.

I found with carbide tips you have to push the lathe with high speeds and high feeds.
Using good metal makes a big difference as well.
Cermets give me the best finish on steels but I have achieved a mirror finish on aluminum with HSS.
