Turn 270 Pro General questions

Post by Jimsiss » Fri 04 Aug , 2023 19:13 pm

Hi, I’ve just picked up a Turn 270 Pro to tinker with in my shed. I’m a CNC Turner by profession so it’s not new to me, having used mainly Fanuc machines most of this is familiar.

A few questions and info requests:

-First of all I’ve had the machine up and running and managed to set the tools and program a few basic test pieces by hand (still getting to grips with the software before I let it program anything). What is the white button for on the front of the machine? Optional extra Chuck open/close?

-Are there any pictures of the optional extras for the lathe? I’m interested to see how tailstock is fitted etc. (mine doesn’t have a tailstock but I was just curious as I couldn’t find much info on it and the other extras.

-Has anyone turned Titanium on a 270/Pro? I’ve turned lots of Titanium so I know what it’s like to work with and in theory anything is possible with enough coolant and small enough cuts.

-Has anyone fitted ER Collet chucks and Carbide micro/mini boring tools? I don’t really like the drill holding setup so I’ve bought some 20mm shank er20m collet chucks to turn/grind down to 19mm and shorten (19mm seems a very strange size to make the internal tool pockets on the turret). I’d like to get some smaller bores machined so I was looking at making up some carbide boring tool holders to fit the turret.

I’m not a fan of the work offset system having used G10s a lot.

I’m sure there will be many more questions to come

I can't help with the Turn 270 questions but regarding the internal tooling pockets they sound the same as on my Orac toolchanger and I believe 3/4" ID as that's 19.05mm. 3/4" round bar is a spot on fit although I haven't used them so far.

The white button on the front should be for indexing the turret manually.

Managed to get a micro boring bar holder made up, I might have gone a tad overboard taking it to 19mm 🤣. Made from an old offcut of 20mm boring bar. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a few test pieces made up over the next week off work…
