Spindle bearing inner seal/shield

Post by asql2580 » Thu 07 May , 2020 22:01 pm

Hello, I recently bought a Dyna Mechtronics DM3000, which is identical to an Orac (mechanically, at least). I knew that the spindle bearings were on their last leg and since I already have gutted the electronics in favor of more modern and much more powerful components, I decided to pull the trigger on the bearings. When I was disassembling the headstock, I may have gotten a bit carried away and pressed out the the inner seals (or shields?), which destroyed them. I have the parts list and diagram for the headstock (the seals are part AC100/105), but there’s no manufacturer listed. Has anyone dealt with replacing these or know of a suitable replacement? They look like Nilos rings, except that they don’t touch the bearing and provide space for grease. My first thought was to turn an aluminum plug with little to no clearance for the shaft and press it in. Thanks!

A bit late maybe, they just hold the grease in so any cup out of any material will do the job as long as it has the correct diameters. Exact shape is not important as long as it does not touch the bearings.

How much force did you apply kn the bearings to get them out? I do not get them out with moderate force and do not dare to use more and damage the head and/or spindle.
