Orac spindle won't work

Post by murray3648 » Thu 04 Apr , 2013 23:50 pm

Hi all,
I have acquired an Orac CNC lathe to teach myself CNC turning.
I,am not a wiring or electronics person but have a good knowledge of 3 axis CNC and laser programming and cutting.
I am able to get the lathe programmed and carrying out the program's but the spindle will not turn.
Tried to run the spindle in manual mode also but no joy.
I took the motor out and had it tested and it is fine.
I have checked the fuses that I can see inside the back of the machine and they are all fine.(5 in total)
Has anyone got any suggestions as to what might be the problem.
Regards Paul.

I think you'd need to send a photo of the electronics and the front panel.
Maybe it's been modified to work differently?

Hi Paul

I believe there were several different makes of motor control units fitted but all are VFD units.
To check which your lathe has it is positioned at the right hand side of the board viewed from the back.
There is some info in the Download files section relating to an electronic on-board overcurrent device, maybe this hasn't reset itself after an overload situation.
Picture of unit fitted in my Orac.

Hi Emgee
This looks like the same VDF unit in mine from memory.
I was going to take some pics tomorrow of the parts and post them up here.
If this is the same VDF unit can it be reset manually or what do I need to do?

Thanks Paul.

Hi Again
These are the photos of my Orac and the electronics.
Feel free to have a look and let me know if you see anything out of the ordinary.
As I have said it all works including the both tape decks tool changer but not the spindle.
Please help if you can.
Thanks Paul.

Still at a loss on this.
The electronics are just a bit beyond my capabilities.
The led on the side of the board is not comming on and only 24volts is going out to each phase of the motor.
Does anyone know if this driver board can be sent to someone for testing or can you buy a new one.
Maybe some of you guys have a spare lying around that you would sell. :delirious:
