Removing X axis ballscrew.

Post by TimPower » Tue 29 Oct , 2013 15:24 pm

Hi all,

Has anyone done this in the past? I have a machine that is losing position so I want to do a full strip. It doesn't always miss in the same position but it might be a flat spot on a ball so there is no harm having a look. The machine sits in the old style safety enclosure so I'm wondering if I will have to remove the whole lathe from the guard as it looks a bit tight, trying to unscrew the ballscrew from the bottom. I can also look at popping off the screw from the top after removing the motor and gearbox and see if the screw will come out from the top. Is there any way to remove the whole X axis assembly from the saddle and work on disassemble remotely. It would be nice to keep the screw and the nut together rather than trying to slide in a former to hold the balls till I'm ready to inspect.
If anyone has done this disassembly before, I would be very glad of any tips.

Rgds,

Tim.
