parts of drawing missing

Post by chrispotts » Mon 14 Mar , 2016 15:22 pm

Hi,
I have been able to draw items in Solidworks 2001, save them as STL files (as advised on this very site( :D ) onto a memory stick, and carry them across the room and load them into VR milling.
My question is . . .why do some elements of the drawing disappear?
For example a wheel, drawn with six holes will only cut four holes on one side, but if I flip the drawing it will only cut two of the six holes and not the outer edge of the wheel rim!
Weird of what?

cheers,

Chris

Can you post a copy & also what diameter tool you are using? if the tool is bigger than the object it can't machine it. Not sure what would happen if it was a 6mm hole & a 6mm cutter.

from experience of machining 3d designs where a hole is the same dia as the cutter I have never had any success. I have always thought the post processors could do with being a bit clever and be able to identify a hole and to carry out a plunge/drill process rather than trying to carry out the process as part of a path. that or have an option to identify holes and specify how to deal with it.

I have resorted to 2.5d machining, creating a 2d file with plunge to required depths to do holes either before or after the 3d machining.

Thanks Guys!
by dropping the motor down notch, and using a smaller diameter cutter ALL of the holes and features are now cut.
I am one happy bunny this morning
