HOWTO: Driver Stepper motors with parallel break out board

Post by summetj » Sun 17 Jan , 2016 4:20 am

I have successfully connected a parallel port break out board to the stepper motor driver on my ScanTek 2000 (a re-branded Denford Micromill 2000) and have the 3 axis moving under Mach3 / LinuxCNC control.

I've posted a video explaining how I did it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJxEdeaLSbU

My website that includes all of the pinout information and photos is here:

http://www.summet.com/blog/2016/01/16/h ... s-control/

Hopefully this documentation will assist others.

Places where I could still use some more information:
1) Which pins on the 96 way connector are for each of the limit/home switches and ESTOP / front cover open switch?

2) Which pin on the 96 way connector should I apply a PWM signal to drive the spindle driver board?

[I have the baldor-eurocard-schematic-and-pinout.pdf file, so I think I could eventually figure this out, but if somebody already has it working I'd appreciate just knowing...]

Thanks,
Jay

Update, I have gotten the home switches and estop switch working, you can see the full set of photos here:

http://www.summet.com/blog/2016/01/17/h ... es-e-stop/

Very briefly:

C26 - Home 0 (X axis). Parallel pin 10
B24 - Home 1 (Y axis). Parallel pin 11
C23 - Home 2 (Z axis). Parallel pin 12
A25 - (E-)STOP. Parallel pin 13.

If you ground C6 it enables the Spindle Go Relay (SGR), but I still don't know if there is a pin on the 96 way connector that you can PWM to control the NextMoveST SpindleOut (SOUT) 0-10 volt signal.

Update 2:

I've gotten PWM spindle motor speed control using the circuitry on the NextMoveST board (via the SOUT pin that is wired to the KB spindle motor controller).

Short answer: Solder a 200-220 ohm resistor to Pin 3 of the OptoIsolator (HCNW4503) and wire that to an output. (Active when low). Also remove surface mount resistor R29, which disconnects Pin3 from the original programmable timer/counter chip that used to drive it.

Longer answer with pictures and video is located here:
