A user has a standard chuck The Jaws of the chuck are stuck, he is unable to loosen or tighten it

The machine "microturn" is a year old

Any suggestions?

The jaws must have been overtightened so the Jaw teeth are jammed againt the scroll.

Try tapping the jaws inward with a hammer to loosen the teeth in the scroll, then it should undo as normal.

May be worth taking the jaws out and inspecting the back teeth for damage.

Trouble call question

Just found out some new information

From Teacher

One of the students opened the jaws too wide and they fell out. I think they tried to put them back in the wrong sequence. There is one still out the other two are at different depths.

I pulled hard enough on the spindle bars to bend them and cannot get it to budge.

From tech

Denford Admin You stated that he can tap it with a hammer to loosen it up

I am going to suggest that he remove the jaws and inspected them for damage. From what I'm understanding they can come out and be put back in

Right?

Thank you for the help!

They can come out and be put back in.

From memory, I think the chuck is marked A B C and the jaws 1, 2, 3
You'll need to get that bit right first and also make sure they are putting them in the right way round - internal and external jaws will be different.

If all else fails - get a new chuck from Sherline - http://www.sherline.com/3jawpg.htm only $100 !

With most chucks the sequence to fitting jaws is.

Take all jaws out of the chuck.

The chuck body and jaws will be marked 1,2,3 or similar.

align all the jaws with the slots then turn the chuck in an unlocking direction

as the scroll passes each jaw you will feel the jaw lift then drop

at the point where jaw 1 drops start to wind the chuck the other way. Jaw 1 will catch on the scroll first then jaw 2 and finally jaw 3.

If you then close the chuck fully the jaws shopuld meet in the centre.
