Martin, thank you very much for the instructions. I have the cover off, (it's a bit awkward to see the encoder except through the rear view window of the machine) and I'm ready to give it a crack. I can see the marker pen marks from when it was done before and it looks roughly midway although I am wondering about the tolerance for this as the maker pen marks are obviously very far from scribed lines...

My main question is how do I find Diagnostic 6.7 .. I can flick through the diagnostic pages but it is not immediately clear to me which I should use ?

I took this from a earlier post.

You press the DGNOS/PARAM button a few times until dignostics appear.
You may also have to be in a certain mode (EDIT or MDI maybe ?)

The diagnostics are in rows of 8 with 0 on the right.

Therfore bit 7 is the 0/1 on the left.

Thank you. So the bit should change from 1 to 0 on the screen automatically as I rotate the encoder and the strobe signal is lost?

It should change over straight away & is solid in either state.

Thanks Martin. I have been doing as instructed but unfortunately, the problem isn't correcting but is in fact possibly worse now (not quite sure how I've managed that). I'm at a loss for what to do...

Does it alarm out all the time?

Yep. It changes in one direction but won't complete the toolchange properly and alarms out. Changing in the other direction it won't budge and alarms out...

Is there a time delay before it alarms out?
Is it clamped back?

Yes. It delays for a while as it is 'trying' to do whatever and then gives up and alarms out.

Indexing in the direction T1, T2, T3...etc it changes, hangs for a while and then alarms out. The turret is sometimes clamped back in position. Sometimes it is free to rotate c. 15 deg in each direction.

Indexing T1, T8, T7 etc it does not change at all but just hangs for a while and then alarms.

It is sounding more like it may be the clamp sensor.
The sensor is next to the shot pin & should have a LED that lights up. Try running with the top cover off & see if it lights. If it does not then you could unlock the nut & wind it down slightly. You should also be able to see it in the Diagnostic but I am not sure which it is though.

I have the top cover but can't see any LED or do I have to remove the solenoid to see it ?

Strangely, it now does the following

changes in reverse direction T8->T7->T6 etc results in a change, hang, alarm out

changes in normal direction T1->T2->T3 etc results in no movement, hang, alarm out

note that prior to the no movement in normal direction it did change a few times but when it alarmed out the solenoid released the shot pin

in all other instances the solenoid is keeping the shot pin pushed in

Apologies for the delay in posting but I should conclude as a good citizen. The problem turned out to be twofold. The first was solved by Martin which turned out to be the proximity switch which needed to be wound down a little further. The second problem, discovered by a local service engineer (who I can highly recommend to anyone in S.E. England), turned out to be the cushion washers, part 032 in the manual, one of which had entirely disintegrated and the other was not far behind. I manufactured a new pair out of nylon and the turret now runs as good as new (touch wood!). Thanks very much for all the help!
