Combining the work of several students

Each student produces their own circuit design. What is the best way to combine these to allow a number to be machined at the same time on a single board, with as little wasted space as possible?

The best way would be to combine the pcb files before exporting the gerber file.
The alternative is to use the automatic spacing setting and import several machine files. You can set the gap between boards to 0.
