Re: Viceroy 280 Syncro Back Gear shift problems

Thanks for the info Pete

I managed to get a dial gauge down into the headstock and there looks to be about 0.4mm of ovality at the crown of the teeth

Looks like I will be digging through the drawings archive to find the specs for the gear

You said you used delrin to remake the gear, I wonder if ...

Re: Viceroy 280 Syncro Back Gear shift problems

I think I may have figured out the problem with the stiff back gear shift

The problem is with the large plastic back gear on the layshaft, when I rotate the head stock shaft by hand the head stock gear and the layshaft gear bind up every second revolution of the headstock shaft, once you turn the ...

Re: Viceroy 280 Syncro Back Gear shift problems

The date came off the manufacturers plate on the machine

I will strip the gears out and have a look on the sides see if there are any score marks

Thanks for the info

Viceroy 280 Syncro Back Gear shift problems

Hi

I am having an intermittent problem with the gear shifter on the headstock. The shifter seems to tighten up as if something is heating up causing the mechanism to bind up.

I have checked the oil level in the headstock and it is Ok ( I am using ISO 32 hydraulic oil ) , I have taken the top of ...

Thread Dial Indicator

Christmas is over and after over a year of searching for a thread dial indicator, I decided to build one !

Found the Denford factory drawings on the forum and after several minutes of study, the dreaded engineer's weakness kicked,
and 40 minutes later a new set of drawings with a ball raced shaft ...

Re: Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

Gearbox is back together and functioning

FYI: I also found another person who would have made the part, John Ward at Lathespares.co.uk and he quoted £35, he told me he had made some previously

Thanks for all the info and tips

Re: Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

Quick update:

New gear being made via a friend in a model engineering society, should be done by this weekend.

Apparently the new blank came out of a 4" round of cast iron - only material in stock and it was in the scrap bin.

He has also taken the worm gear to redress , so hopefully by the ...

Re: Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

Thanks for all the info

I have reassembled the saddle minus the offending parts and the lathe is now back in operation.

I will start sending the drawing out today to get quotes,
hopefully someone will have the correct cutter to do the job in their tool inventory

Re: Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

2 teeth mullered on one gear,

Gear is 2" dia, with 33 teeth ( 31 at the moment ) 5/8" thick , 1" dia hole which keys on to another gear with grub screws
and the teeth seem to be set at an angle of ~3 degrees , it's the first gear off the worm drive - left handed

Let the search begin!

Any thoughts ...

Re: Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

I do like obvious faults, having played with steam locos for a number of years obvious faults are few and far between ( unless a wheel falls off )

Tomorrow is the day when I get around to stripping it down.

Whatever I find I will post some pics

Re: Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

Same fault in both modes, I am guessing that there is a primary drive cog(s) and that's where the fault is.

If the broken cog is steel or brass I might try to build it back up with braze or silver solder

If it's something else learn how to measure a cog and hope HPC have something close

If you ...

Re: Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

Thanks for the info, the problem is in the apron, both shafts from the gearbox are turning and applying pressure to them while in motion does not cause them to slip. After further examination of the fault i would guess there is a tooth or two off a cog ( fault occurs at the same place and by ...

Apron Removal from a Synchro 280

Can anyone advise how to remove the apron from Synchro 280VS, I am having problems with the power feed slipping and think I have some gear problems in the apron.

I have the manual for the lathe but it doesn't help much.

Was hoping that you would be able to drop the apron off from the saddle, but I ...

WANTED parts for Denford Viceroy 280 synchro

Hi, I have recently acquired a Denford Viceroy synchro and I am looking for a couple of parts for it:

1. A thread dial indicator, mine is a metric lathe of 1982 vintage

2. A fixed steady, I would settle for a photo of one with some rough dimensions so I could butcher, I mean modify a donor part to ...
