VR Robot / VR CIM Version 1.24 has been released. This version supersedes
all existing VR Robot and VR CIM versions.

Previous versions of this product were not 'Network Friendly'.

(For all you techi nerds out there, this is the reason why, if you're not
interested in the techi bits, go straight to the SOLUTION)

Previous versions used the following data structure for users files

a.. The VR Application resides in the "C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR"
directory.
b.. The user database (USERS.INI) resides in "C:\PROGRAM
FILES\DENFORD\VR" directory
c.. Individual room files are sub-directories of this. Eg. Room1 resides
in "C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM1"
d.. Individual users files reside in a unique sub-directory of these
room directories, with the sub directory name being a unique user number
allocated at the time the user was created. Eg. a User called Bob may have
been given a unique user ID of 7 and so his files would be kept in a
directory named "C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM1\7"
The disadvantage of this filing system was that...

a.. The users files have to be kept in a sub directory of the VR
application files (in a network situation it is preferred to keep the
application directory and the users directories completely separate for
security reasons).
b.. users files are scattered among different directories.
c.. The names of the directories gives no indication as to the users
actual name.
SOLUTION:-

The main reason for releasing this product is in order to make the VR Robot
/ VR CIM products more 'Network Friendly'.
Version 1.24 has the following changes...

a.. A new "User Manager" application has been developed (called
VRUSER.EXE), which resides in a UTILS directory of the CD-ROM and is NOT
installed onto the hard drive during normal VR software installation. The
reason for this is that it is not desirable for students to have access to
the User Manager.
b.. You can now decide if new users are allowed to be created by
entering a new name into the VR Linker opening dialog box, or wether they
must be created via the User Manager (this is selectable within the user
manager itself)
c.. When creating a new user, you are prompted to create a user
directory which will hold all the users work files. This directory does not
have to be related to the application directory and can be a unique
directory on a hard drive (such as C:\FRED) or a network drive letter and
directory (such as N:\MYWORK)
NOTE that if you press CANCEL when prompted for a directory name, a user
will be created using the old directory structure.
d.. When creating a new user, a template can be selected, allowing a new
user to be created based upon any existing user. Also, you can select what
elements of that template you create (for example you can create example
robot files but not example cell sequence files). This allows users to be
created to work on specific areas of the software.
e.. Both old and new directory structures can be used, allowing for
backwards compatibility. When a user logs on to VVR Linker, the software
first tries to find a directory using the new directory structure. If this
fails it then tries again using the old method. If this fails an error is
reported.
EXAMPLE:-

OLD system with a user called Fred having a user ID of 2 would have the
following file system:

VR_LINKER application resides in
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR

Users files reside in
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM1\2
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM2\2
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM3\2
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM4\2
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM5\2
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM51\2
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM52\2
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM53\2
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM54\2
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DENFORD\VR\ROOM55\2

NEW system with a user called Fred running on an RM network would have the
following file system:

VR_LINKER application resides in
P:\APPS\DENFORD\VR

Users files reside in
N:\MYWORK\ROOM1
N:\MYWORK\ROOM2
N:\MYWORK\ROOM3
N:\MYWORK\ROOM4
N:\MYWORK\ROOM5
N:\MYWORK\ROOM51
N:\MYWORK\ROOM52
N:\MYWORK\ROOM53
N:\MYWORK\ROOM54
N:\MYWORK\ROOM55

OTHER ENHANCEMENTS:-

The 2 world VR Robot product (VR Robot Lite) can now be donglised or Flash
Screened, and so sold as a standard Denford product (the original spec. for
this software was that it would be sold through RM as an unprotected
product).
