I'd have a damn good go at making one myself first. Grind a bit from HSS or gauge plate and fly-cut the teeth.

Thanks for all the info

I have reassembled the saddle minus the offending parts and the lathe is now back in operation.

I will start sending the drawing out today to get quotes,
hopefully someone will have the correct cutter to do the job in their tool inventory

Ouch!

Mind you I was expecting more. Try putting a wanted ad on somewhere like Homeworkshop or Madmodder and see if someone can do better.

I've installed pdfill now so here's a better quality version than the image above, and easier to save and view on different devices.

I am not sure, but maybe someone can confirm, a lot of the parts on the 280 are the same as was used on the old TDS lathes.
It is possible that the apron gears are interchangable with the TDS 1 GB, if so it widens your scope in searching for a gear.

Correct - parts that have an 'ML....' number are carried over from the TDS models

Quick update:

New gear being made via a friend in a model engineering society, should be done by this weekend.

Apparently the new blank came out of a 4" round of cast iron - only material in stock and it was in the scrap bin.

He has also taken the worm gear to redress , so hopefully by the weekend I will not have to pull up the power feed lever
and wonder why the carriage is not moving

Good news...
Wish I had a friend who threw away scraps of useable materials, I would make camp next to his scrap bin.

Gearbox is back together and functioning

FYI: I also found another person who would have made the part, John Ward at Lathespares.co.uk and he quoted £35, he told me he had made some previously

Thanks for all the info and tips

I know this is a while ago but I think I may have the same issue. The cross slide crashed and now the cross feed screw is bent at the gear. Also the saddle only moves a few inches then something in the apron jams, both feed directions. I have the saddle off the apron but can't see how to get the apron off the lathe. Is the only way to get the apron off to take the support block for the feed shaft and leadscrew off the right end of the lathe and slide the saddle off that end? Hope you can help. Andy
