If its' a DC spindle motor then could be a faulty "Spindle Reverse" relay. This relay simple swaps the armature wires to the spindle motor.

If it's an AC motor & Inverter drive then the drive has a reverse input derived from the main control board. Could be a fault on the board or the drive

I had the same problem with my '86 Triac, I tried changing the relays, but this did not solve the problem, so this seemed like a circuit board problem.

My solution was to swap two phases on the motor, and always programme Reeverse (M04), this then giving the forward motion required. I did this as a safety feature because before, programming reverse would always give me reverese, but prog forward would sometimes give either forward or reverse.

So swapping the wires now always gives me forward although via programming M04, which is not a problem as reverse is rarely used anyhow.
