Triac motor only runs in reverse.

Post by Roy » Thu 15 Feb , 2007 23:51 pm

I have just come across a small problem with the Triac!

Spindle motor only runs in reverse with both M04 and M03!!!

Any Ideas??

Thanks Roy

I had this when I first got my Triac. For me it was a sticky relay on the main board in the spindes section. I just repeatedly tapped the relay as the spindle started. It then went the right way.

Now it is used more its freed up and I don't have to do it any more.

Strange but true..............

Triac was made with both AC and DC spindle motors...

AC spindle motor forward/reverse was done by the spindle drive and used a low current relay fitted to the main PCB to switch the foward/reverse input into the spindle drive (I think this is the type Mat is talking about).

DC spindle motor had this small relay switching a bigger (13 Amp) relay mounted off the PCB next to the spindle drive that was used to reverse the spindle motor armature wires. This could also be the culprit (and quite likely that the contacts of this relay have welded themselves shut!)

Sometimes the motor does run forward but more oftern reverse.

I have played around with the relays but with no luck.
However i have removed the spindle control relay, no 3 I think (is this a good idea?) Now the motor seems to run in forward most of the time, but occasional reverse.

???

It sounds like you have the wrong relay. The Triac would always go in reverse but this relay fires to make it go forwards. If the relay is broken, or not there, it will only go backwards.

If you have the AC motor its one of a bank of 3 relays all together. There soldered in.

previous posting, i said i removed spindle relay, however the one removed was for lube pump!!!, so i will put that back in. that will teach me for posting before thinking!!

Anyway still no joy so far with the 'actual' spindle relays!

After thinking about this for a while, My intended solution if I can not get the relay to work, is to swap the motor wiring around and always programme M04 and the motor should always run forwards, as i am not likely to want to use reverse anyway.

Unless there is something odd about this machine, M03 (Clockwise) should be the one to use on a mill for the majority of cutters :?

I think I am confusing you a little here. I understand M3 is clockwise. But as this is causing problems with the relay, I have swapped the motor wiring so now if I always program M04 (reverse), I will always get forward motion with no problems. Where as before the relay was required to 'switch' to obtain forward, but oftern stuck, so the motor ran in reverse when it should have been forward. :!:
