Strange, As long as you are sorted now.

nope not sorted sadly.

a brand new stepper died, although this shouldnt have been caused by only wiring in 4 coils.

what is a likely cause of a brand new stepper dying? coould a faulty drive cause this?

ill have to get a new stepper and look to wire in all 8 coils, i just dont want it to die after a month like this one

what are the colours of all wires, and which ones do you have wired.

this is the stepper I got

the 3.1amp one

don't know all the colours off hand but see below for what I wired in

What have you done with the blue, black, brown, green?

It does not look correct from what I can see.

Use The red & orange as one pair. The blue & green as the second pair & link the yellow/white & black/brown as pairs

Andy if you have a good multimeter you can identify the coils by their resistance

Yes, Thinking about we have had a couple of motors recently where the colours did not match with the relative windings.

tom that's actually how we wired it in, we used a multi meter the check how the existing one was wired. then wired the new one exactly the same

what resistance do you get across one coil without it connected to the driver. Make sure the driver is off before you disconnect.

The motor would not have been supplied with only 4 wires connected. I suspect the 4 wires shown would have been paired up to put the windings in series.

The motor would be 3A and depending on the stepper drive be wired in parallel (for 4.2A Drive) or series for the standard Denstep 2A drive.

Can you tell me the drive you are using and its supply current?
The part number of the motor you are using?

How has the motor failed? Can you take a reading of the phase resistances for each phase of the motor?

I haven't no, my daughter hasn't been well so I've not been in the workshop much.

I just purchased 7x bt35 tool holders for £10 each ;)

What you got?

grrr.... again today the stepper is missing steps again.

this is such an annoying fault that im struggling to get to the bottom of

swap x and y drive card round today just to check that again and its 100% not the drive card

ok heres the problem.

not sure how well you can hear it on this video, but I tried.

listen to the knock knock knock coming from the tables, its the table missing steppes.

drive card checked and work fine - swapped x and y card round and the issue was still on the x

checked wiring between cabinet and actual mill and again fine

Ethernet cable comes into control cabinet and into a smooth stepper, smooth stepper goes into a big control board, which then feeds into tom's board, which converts 5v into 24v or whatever the digi cards need.

checked toms board and again fine.

really stuck what to do now
