triac tool changer orientation troubles

Post by P.J.SAILS » Tue 13 Mar , 2012 19:04 pm

Following on previous posts re our TRiac fanuc atc mill .
we took position of this machine some time ago and have
found a few problems , which one by one have been fixed,
some with the forums help .many thanks for that.
The next problem that has raised its head is the tool changer , not
working properly . to be more specific the tool changer will work
if the spindle orinates correctly . which it some time does when the
spindle motor is cold , but if you run the spindle motor for say 3/4 mins
or more , then the spindle does not orintate correctly ( it stops short of its sensor's
2nd passing).
Now what we know ,
the spindle motor is a dc lense motor ( no Taco).
the drive board has been changed it is now a sprint 3200I
the problem apears to be down to the new board compensating down ( to much)
the amount of current needed to keep the spindle rotating after it starts
to orinate .for lenough turns to set off the 2 pass sensor. which in turn
starts the rest of the tool change sequence .
as also the control board also backs down the amount of power sent to the
motor this it does by putting 0.3volt across the input to the drive board
( measured with volt meter, while doing an M19 ). until the spindle does one pass
on the sensor, then the control card drops the voltage to 0.15 volts . and the spindle stops and does not make the 2 rotation ..
is there a way to adjust the voltages (mainly the second one) sent from the
control board .
sprint's. advise is to fit a taco generator.
any ideas .thanks peter .

These are the Fanuc 0MC parameters relating to the spindle.
It may be worth looking at those to see if any adjustments can be made to the analogue when orientating - unfortunately I can't see anything obvious called "Orientation 2nd Output Voltage" :(
The orientate voltage *may* be altered by a minimum speed setting, or by adjusting the gear range values thus causing the analogue to increase for a given speed - maybe ?
How much information do you have with the machine ? Do you have the Logic ladder listing, parameter and diagnostic print outs? They will be worth looking through...

Thanks for the reply . and the list .
i'll have a look at this .
I have the basic fanuc service manual ,
with a symbol list / comment list
How do i get the machine to print out its
parameters settings .

You would have to hook it up to an RS232 PC/Laptop and tell it to output the parameters - then you can print that plain text file from a PC.
Some tips for saving the Fanuc paramters and diagnostics:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2097
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2316&start=60
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=3246
*Remember not to turn off the control while the RS232 is active (LSK is flashing) or it'll wipe it's memory*

Most parameters are 0 so it's not an impossible job to write the ones that aren't, down - also make sure you save the diagnostic bits from about 400-500

hi phil
Not sure whats gone wrong with this machine since you got it off me because it was in full working order but i can help but think that the bang it sustained in transit is playing a big part here.
If you look through all the manuals i sent down with it you will see all the parameters in the lists in the manuals and also the full electrical wiring diagrams and also the ladder drawings and specs.
The spindle orientation sounds like the voltage isnt going through to turn the spindle enough on the 2nd turn so check the voltage on the first turn and monitor it on the 2nd turn and adjust the board to suit.

Hello,
I am still pursuing these same troubles . work gets in the way yes another year gone .!
and am trying to amend the Tanuc om parameters . without any success . i can alter the figures in the
Parameters . on the screen ( with pwe =1 enabled) but nothing seems to change in the machine .
i was trying to get the orientation voltage up a little . but with no success
so i have tried to changed the max speed of the motor ,
also the speed to 10v set up , but nothing seems to change .
you can specify a speed above the new set max . with no error codes or anything .
I have even done a restart after each change . to try a get a response .
What am i missing ?

Hi Peter,

We changed how the tool changer worked after this & removed the V slot cap on the pneumatic unit & ground the draw bar flat to remove the need to line up the orientation. We still do it this way now & do not use the drive dogs at all.
If you do this you would need to remove the drive dogs & fit bigger pads on the springs.

Hi Martin . thanks for the reply .
yes i understand this way around the problem , we have already taken of the drive dogs .
but the tool changer wont start to come in to remove the old tool . until
the spindle orientation has been completed , and the motor wont complete
its 2 nd turn , past the sensor . hence my attempts to increase the spindle motor
orientation voltage .
can the requirement for orientation of the spindle be removed from the tool changer sub programme ??

Not too sure on that.

Have you tried increasing the min speed slightly on the sprint drive?

Hi .

Yes , tried that , iv checked the voltage out for 500.1000, 2000 and 4000 all ok

also checked orientation voltage , this is low , which is why i wanted to alter the Fanuc Parameters .

also can you turn off the requirement to orientate .before a tool change.

not sure if its the same problem or not, but i had an issue with the ATC not spinning properly on my triac. it turned out to be a small grub screw that connects the atc to the spindle of the motor was lose. i tightened this up and not had a problem since.

not sure if thsi info will help or not.
