Denford Starmill capability

Post by goldian » Sat 16 May , 2015 10:11 am

Hi all
Hoping you can help with a very simple question
I am thinking of buying a Denford Starmill with mach 3 to use for milling brass, aluminum and stainless steel parts for an orrery / clock parts etc
initially using 3mm thick CZ120 brass - will the starmill handle this ok do you think ?

Many thanks
Ian

Hi Ian

I don't have a Starmill but am sure it will cut the parts for clockmaking, especially brass components but like any machine you will need sharp cutters on that material for a pristine finish on a skeleton clock !!!!
Aluminium should not present any problems.
Stainless steel is available in several grades, some are really tough to cut and best avoided, a Starmill should cope with the easier to cut grades provided you keep the tool cutting and not rubbing, some form of coolant may be required.
Hope this helps.

Rgds, Emgee
