Orac lathe torque issue

Post by PaulC » Tue 07 Apr , 2009 10:59 am

We have just purchased a second orac machine and we are finding that the spindle is slowing and stalling the machine out even with very small cuts. I am aware that the orac has very little torque available but this second machine has much less than the first machine we have bought, we have bought this machine for a specific job which the firts one carries out fine.

Does anyone know if there is any adjustment on the torque? we have checked the drive belts and they all seem well adjusted.

take the belt off and see it the spindle turns easily.. after 20 odd years the grease could have "set"

It may be that the spindle drives needs adjusting. If may be that if both Oracs are of similar ages they will have the same drives so you will be able to compare.
I think most of the Oracs were fitted with a Brown Prestel unit. If you open the rear cover the spindle is on the right. It may be a problem with either the current or boost pot.
