Settings for communications with PC

Having trouble getting the Industrial Text Editor program to communicate with my Easiturn3.
This is what I've done so far:
-Made a cable according to the wiring diagram given in various posts, to connect to the 15 pin serial port on my laptop running windows 98.
-Tested Easiturn RS232 port both at the 9 pin and at the 15 pin plug end of the cable.
PC serial port (COM1):
-Set up via device manager to match configuration, 4800 bits/sec, 7 data bits, 1 stop bit, even parity, no flow control.
Industrial Text Editor as follows (I have the manual, downloadable elsewhere):
-Simple test program with PNC suffix written in the text editor (TEST.PNC)
-Load program TEST.PNC
-Selected PNC in Configure menu (according to manual, no other settings are required for PNC controllers)
-Select Transmit program in the Communicate menu
Easiturn:
-Connect Easiturn and PC via cable as above
-Switch and select Data Link, Host Computer (Option 1)
The Easiturn says loading and the Text editor says transmitting, but nothing appears to happen.
What am I doing wrong ?
Any guidance appreciated. If any one out there has a working configuration I can try, I would be most grateful.
