Using Boxford back gears on Vicerory TDS/PCS lathe?

Post by Taylon » Tue 08 Oct , 2013 2:00 am

Hello to you all,

Does anyone know if Boxford lathe back gears are compatible with Denford Vicerory TDS/PCS tds back gears?

Can Boxford lathe back gears be used in conjunction with Denford back gears without any harm being done?

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Kindest regards, John R.

John,

Do you mean back gears, or are you referring to the change wheels used for thread cutting and power feeds?

If you do mean back gears - sorry I don't know, having no knowledge of the internals of Boxford headstocks.

Regarding change wheels:
According to https://www.lathes.co.uk/boxford - Boxford use 14.5 degrees
whilst the Denford drawings call up 20 degrees.
Mixing the two would have imperfect mesh, hence excessive noise and wear.

Dear Andy,

In answer to your post, I mean the change wheels for fine power feeding.

However after speaking to Bedetools, have now found out that Boxford change wheels are NOT compatible with Denford change wheels for this lathe. They have tried and have broken Denford gears when attempting to use a combination of Boxford and Denford change wheel gears on the same lathe.

Still looking for the 66/18 and 72/18 compound change wheels. Are you able to help or supply these change wheels?

Kindest regards, John R.

John,

The arrangement drawing for the end drive is here:
viewtopic.php?f=50&t=2986

From that you can identify the gear part numbers you need.

The part drawings for those should then be in here:
viewtopic.php?f=50&t=2941.

I'm assuming you now have a basic working lathe - so could you turn the blanks, then find someone locally who could do the gear cutting for you?

Dear Andy,

Thank you for your informative reply.

However the link to drawings seem to be for Viceroy V280s and NOT for TDS/PCS metric lathe I have.

Yes, I now have basic working lathe and could turn gear blanks, but the cost of getting a specialist gear company to cut just a one off production would be prohibitive in comparison to the value of the lathe in my possession IMHO. Really, looking for someone who is selling/scrapping a similar lathe with the required compound gears for a reasonable price, or is willing to sell me just those gears.

Any other suggestions?

Kindest regards, John R.

John,

The 'ML' number drawings started from the original 5" series lathes like yours - so whilst a few might be for the 280 series only, most are universal.

Try your local model engineering club - you might find someone who has cut their own gears for a model traction engine or similar, and would do the job for a few beer tokens.
Or try Tony Griffiths at www.lathes.co.uk
