HI

As Mr Magoo said without major rebuilding / rewiring the machine will only run off serial comms in Dos.

I have a manual for a Starturn 4 for a BBC. Not sure how different the 2 systems are.

Cheers

Can you remove the drive motor (leaving the turret on the machine) and see if the motor rotates? You could also then put something into the motor coupling on the turret and try and rotate the toolchanger.

If the fans is coming on then the 240V in is good. It sounds a bit like a power supply problem to the 'processing' section if neither the keyboard or screen work. On the X axis, try removing the cover on the back of the 'table' - green sheet metal with 2 screws. When you remove this you will be able...

A ModIO is probably a good option for the ATC, alternatives include getting hold of a cheap PLC, or even making your own PIC controller. Whichever solution you chose will require some programming in Mach. For spindle speed control you probably want to look at the Digispeed XL. I thoroughly reccomend...

There is potentially one big advantage for going to geckos. From memory, all the stepper motors are rated around 3A. However, the X and Y digiplan drivers are only 2A, and the Z axis is a 3A - so potentially you may be able to get some more torque from the motors. Whether the power supply is upto it...

Are you using a breakout board between the PC your circuit? It is a good idea to use an opto-isolated breakout board to protect the PC. Have a look at the ones here - http://www.cnc4pc.com/Store/osc/index.php?cPath=33 From memory I didn't use the BC547 as I couldn't get any so I used a higher spec t...

1) Basically it's a simple switch 2) The signal lines on the stepper are held at a voltage (12v from memory), a change in the signal consists of hooking them up to 0v. The transistors are used as switches, the resistors are there to limit current. 3,4,6) The left hand side of the diagram is the para...

Personally I don't see much point in using Mastercam with the Orac - with only 99 'pages' you are soon going to fill it up.

I do however have a post for the Triac that works like a dream :P

Hi Roy Sorry I haven't posted earlier - spent last week in bed and work has been hectic. So you are trying to communicate under windows from my brief flick through the thread. It can be done with Hyperterminal but you need to send the correct line end characters. When I wrote some software to commun...

Hi Certainly is possible. You can almost certainly se the original stepper drivers if you want. See my thread on my Starturn conversions for more details. If you do decide to change the stepper drivers go for Gecko's. The other drivers you see that appear to be similar to Geckos are often cheap copi...

Our 1985 Triac has a hook either side of the column at the rear. These are permanently fitted to the column.

Hello Repeated the same test last night in steel (with the spindle speed turned up :P ). 1" bar to 5/8" bar in just under 2 minutes. You can actually hear the spindle motor slow at the start of the cut then the closed loop control takes over and holds it steady. No video of that one though as I was ...

Starturn at work video

Inspired by Triac Whizz - here's my machine at work. Not a particulalry exciting video but just a quick view of my starturn at work the other day. For anyone who says these machines are toys then that is 0.01" depth cuts at 17"/min It has been as far as 0.01" depth cuts at 20"/min(500mm/min!) with H...

Sounds like a knackered home switch. It should work in one of 2 ways :- 1 ) It should work by having a normally open (NO) contact, when the switch is open it homes in one direction. When the switch is closed the direction of travel is reversed until the switch goes open 2) It should work by having a...

Clear Out

Right I need to clear out a few bits at home. 1) Starturn 4 BBC processor board, believed to be working, early type with relays on board - you pay the postage and its yours. 2) BBC Micro & BBC master, one or both may contain Denford ROM chips for a starturn 4, also a working monitor included. Free i...
