Hi Brian, is it possible to mount your vice on a plate to move the mounting points so it fits inside the case. I've done this with 2 boxford vices and it works well.

Re: Stepper and spindle
have a look at the three drive ic's at the right end of the smartstep/3 board. If one or more look like they have a burnt hole in the centre, it's curtains for that ic. You could swap the y and z sockets over to see if it's the drive that's gone.

Re: Smartstep/3 capacitor question
The older boards I've can see here are domed.. the newer ones look a bit flatter but not perfectly flat. I also wouldn't worry about it as I've never seen one of these blow in the last 10 years. Good question though...my 40" TV wouldn't turn on a couple of weeks ago and that turned out to be failed...

Re: Smartstep/3 capacitor question
from the variety of machines that i've seen that use this board they've all had a domed top on this capacitor.

Re: Orac Inverter
i would go a fair bit above 100hz, as the inverter runs the motor at 100hz on full speed.

Re: How hot- Stepper motors
the stepper motors will run the hottest while standing still, as soon as you start working they'll cool down a fair bit. When stationary they are being held in position, which builds up a bit of heat.

it may only be an output chip that has failed, and they're easy to get hold of.

Re: Orac Inverter
there is a manual available on his site for the inverters, but they have the usual 0-10v (and others) input for speed and a two way switch for direction.

Re: Orac Inverter
If you can't get the inverter working, you can replace it with an inverter from "drives direct" like this one

Re: Orac Inverter
The grey wires do go to a choke, and although the inverter is a little slow to respond it works very well with good torque levels at low revs. The choke looks like a transformer with just two wires coming out of the top of it, and is usually located in the left hand end of the machine behind the hea...

Re: Micromill limit switch question
you don't have to have soft limits or limit switches, but it does help your peace of mind. You could add extra limit switches to the three axis and then you'll be fine.

Re: Micromill limit switch question
I've had a nose at the turbocnc manual, and it doesn't look like it has a softlimit feature, but you can use the switches as home switches. One way round this is to use Mach3, which will give you a far better interface and it's windows based rather than dos based.

Re: Micromill limit switch question
looking at the schematic for the micromill, the microswitches are used as the home switches. The axis movements are then limited the other end by softlimits within the software.
