Re: Pneumatic Cylinder Draw Bar clamp/unclamp
Thanks for the replies. It was the oil that needed topping up and closer investigation revealed that the cylinder could do with re-placement seals. In case anyone needs a replacement in the future, I did manage to locate a source and part number for a re-placement cylinder. (See attachment). Many th...

Pneumatic Cylinder Draw Bar clamp/unclamp
Hi I have a Denford ATC Star Mill (1994) and the draw bar cylinder clamp/unclamp stroke is only 4.5mm which is not enough to release the tool holder. It has got steadily worse, but I wouldn’t know what the stroke was initially. The part number on the cylinder is Compair Climax L.11.B VB439-C. The th...

Wanted preferably Starmill ATC
I am after a CNC mill of a similar size and weight of a Starmill. It is important that it has pneumatic drawbar for quick release/reload of tooling. I think I am correct in assuming that the machine would need to have ATC facility for there to be a pneumatic draw bar. I wouldn't use ATC function any...

Disabling the ATC
Hi Some of you may recall I had problems getting my ATC to work. Just to paint the picture and recap. The head moves up the carousel arm moves in, the head comes down and the drawbar unclamps, the head then moves up clear and there it sits with the carousel arm in the in position until it times out....

Re: ATC for StarMill
Ok Martin, thanks for your help. It is just so annoying, as the only thing which does not happen is the carousel indexing. I will look to put a switch into the control box which will activate the draw bar for a manual tool change and put M01 optional stops in the programs. Hi Pete, thanks for the of...

Re: ATC for StarMill
Carried out the checks and all seems to be ok. There is defiantly power to the ATC motor. The only thing I am not too sure about is the ATC sensor. When this sensor is in contact with the block I get a 12V reading, when I break the contact it drops down to 6V. All in all I am confident that power wi...

Re: ATC for StarMill
Following on from earlier post and getting closer. By inputting M24 T1 M25 in MDI or Auto the carousel arm moves in, the head moves down and unclamps, the head then moves up and then times out. Once this time out occurs I need to power everything down and then back up again in the correct sequence. ...

Re: ATC for StarMill
Thanks Martin, I am getting somewhere now. In the machine parameters I was able to change the machine active to a starmill (which wasn't an option when I installed VRMilling) then activate the ATC, I also enabled the M codes to allow me to Clamp/Unclamp drawbar and Carousel in/out. There was no M co...

Re: ATC for StarMill
Just to elaborate further, the air pressure supply is set to 100 lbs and when the Drawbar solenoid is energised the air cylinder in the head can be heard to operate, but not sufficiently to release the toolholder, it remains firm in the spindle. Also the Tool carousel moves to the toolchange positio...

ATC for StarMill
Hi All I have had a little play with recently acquired Starmill but unfortunately I can not activate ATC (XYZ axis and spindle all fine). The software I have is VRMilling and from there I can switch to either Fanuc OM or Fanuc 21i or stay in VR. I have tried to move carrier/ram in, index the carouse...

Re: Recommended PC for StarMill ATC
Up and running!! many many thanks to TDIPower and Traic.
It was down to swapping the TX and RX pin connections over on the cable which came with the machine as Pete said above.
Just need to read up on VRMilling now and play

Re: Recommended PC for StarMill ATC
If you are running VRMilling version 2.31 you do not need the desk top tutor as you control it directly from the computer. Therefore you will only need 1 Com port. Make sure you use the correct RS232 lead as the two in the second picture are not. Thanks for taking the time to respond chaps. I am no...

Re: Recommended PC for StarMill ATC
Hi Sorry for the delay, had man flu, but should pull through. The machine is November 1993. I am in the process of trying to find a PC with 2 serial com ports which is proving difficult as I am not to clever with computers. I have also just ordered a compressor. Here (hopefully) are some pics... Reg...

Recommended PC for StarMill ATC
I have acquired a StarMill ATC, it came with the Control box, Desk Top Tutor and VR CNC Milling software Version 2.31. I would like to get it up and running and hopefully someone will be kind enough to point me in the right direction. Could anyone advise which PC I need to purchase that would be bes...
