Re: NOVAMILL TO MACH 3 Conversion
Hi Laurent. I realise this thread is many years old now but is this still an option? Hi Dixonsca, Wow!!! This brings back memories! :D This was a looooooooooooooooooong time ago! To answer your question, yes this still an option but as you said it was a long time ago, so I'll have to increase the c...

Re: ORAC backlash
Hi, You shouldn't have any back lash on a ballscrew (or at least nothing noticeable) Best thing to do is to take this ballscrew with the nut of the machine and see if there is any play between the nut and the screw. If there is, it needs replacing (Or left alone and compensate by the sofware Mach3 l...

Re: Orac spindle nose taper
I can't find any drawings of the headstock. Is it pretty obvious how to remove it? Yes... There are 4 M8 nuts tightening the casting against captive screws in the bed. 2x of them are at the back of the head (You can see them just by looking behind it in a recess at the bottom of the casting. and 2x...

Re: Orac spindle nose taper
Well, in theory it is possible... But how do you plan on setting the angle of 7.125 deg ??? I don't know what kind of lathe you have but, I don't have such precision on mine. Also, You could bring the headstock of the ORAC with you. It is small enough and fairly easy to remove. Just 4x M8 nuts / bol...

Re: Orac spindle nose taper
Yes I've just realised that myself! But you could still make the morse taper hollow. Like this (attached) Obviously it's a compromise between wall thickness and smaller clearance diameter. Exactly... :) The ideal would be to know what the outer taper is - seems crazy that no one knows! Well, what's...

Re: Orac spindle nose taper
I've been wondering about fitting (or making) a collet chuck for my Orac. It looks like no-one knows definitively what the taper is on the spindle nose. I'm wondering about simply using the morse 3 taper on the inside of the spindle to provide concentric registration, and using the m8 bolt holes to...

Re: Orac spindle nose taper
Hi Emgee, For concentricity... no problem, I use the same fitting on my manual lathe (Boxford) and concentricity is perfect, DTI does not move at all. For reversing the spindle, why would you do that? I never use the spindle in reverse ? (In fact since the Mach3 conversion, I removed this facility) ...

Re: pulleys needed for novaturn please
Hi audio.fi, These are standard time pulley and belt. You can just get them of eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Business-Office-Industrial-/12576/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=XL+pulley&LH_PrefLoc=1 But, If I were you I would change all of them for T5 type. A lot more common than XL's. http://www.ebay.co.uk/...

Re: Orac spindle nose taper
Hi all,
I found the solution... No more custom made back plate.... No more hammering the spindle !
I got the spindle nose re-machine to the old Boxford threaded standard 1.5" x 8 TPI BSF. (see picture attached)
Back plate for these can be bought on eBay for about £17...

Re: Novamill equivalent stepper motors
Hi bradders, Steppers on the Nova are really tiny... So any Nema23 motors would do for X For Y it is a bit more tricky as you need to watch the lengh of the motor as the physical size is limitted inside the column. For Z it is a Nema34 These should work: For X and Y: http://www.zappautomation.co.uk/...

Hi Alan,
I could converted to Mach3 for you for a small fee... if you bring it to me...
Where are you based?
I've done a few Nova, Micromill and TRIACs so far.

Re: Independent 4 jaw chuck ?
Hi, It took me a bit of time and effort to get the chuck off, but it may have been there a while... I'll try again, it maybe easier now. L I tryed again... It won't definitively not fall off by itself after removing the 3 nuts! It needs a few taps from the back... Just notice something on your pictu...

Re: Independent 4 jaw chuck ?
Lots of ideas indeed ! :-) Thought of something last night... I don't really like the way the chuck attach to the spindle... Every time I want to change chuck I need to go throu the process of removing the 3 nuts, then tap the chuck from the back. Not really a good system is it? So.............What ...

Re: Independent 4 jaw chuck ?
Hi Emgee, Thank you for your help! :-) I would love making a new back plate to mount various chuck. The problem is, on the ORAC the spindle nose has a kind of male taper used to locate the back plate. therefore the backplate has to have a tappered hole in the center and....I don't know the angle! :-...
