Re: Triac Problems - Stepper Driver Dead

Had a closer look at my mill today and the jumpers are setup the same as yours. I tried installing the new drive with LK1 fitted and the motor just hummed. Switcjed it with LK2 (like the Y axis setup) and it now works perfectly.

Re: Triac Problems - Stepper Driver Dead

Hi Tom Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Hopefully I'm now sorted - got hold of a secondhand unit. Just need to swap the heatsinks and we should be back in business :D One interesting thing I noticed. If you look at the SD2/3/5 Manual at the jumper settings it says LK1 - leave fitted, LK2 ...

Triac Problems - Stepper Driver Dead

Well having gone to all the trouble of retrofitting the old stepper and spindle drivers into a new cabinet and getting everything working with Mach 3 - my Z axis groaned, vibrated and then ground to a halt. The machine has been working brilliant until now. Now I've tried swapping the Z and Y axis st...

Re: Orac opto sensor board

If it's the same as the one on the starturn (which I think it is) you need to supply the sensor with a 12v supply and you will get a 5v output from the signal lines.

Re: Starturn 4 Mechanical Questions

The only time I have an issue with mine losing steps is if I haven't used it for a couple of weeks and the slides seemed to get gummed up. Before I run the machine I always cycle it back and forth a few times the whole lenght of both axes with a drop of oil. This sorts it out and it's fine then. I d...

Re: Starturn 4 Mechanical Questions

From my experiences of denfords the spindles always tend to run quite warm - we always used to joke at work that those canny yorkshire lads had included a tea warming facility. Seriously though my starturn generally tends to run quite hot - just hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold. The Triac and ...

Re: New Triac Retrofit

Well - it has been a while since I posted on this thread so with some good progress today I thought I would update everyone. Got hold of an old machine stand from what I think is an Emco mill from a tech college. Stripped the Triac from the base, stripped the electronics and then cut the top off the...

Wanted ORAC Spindle Drive Choke

Hello

Does anyone have one of these units going spare? I'm looking at an Orac for a friend that has been part retrofitted. The Parajust spindle drive is there, but the choke is missing. If anyone has one they wish to sell then please get in touch.

Cheers

Re: Orac Inverter

Hi Guys

Seaman - did you get your inverter going? I've been asked to help a friend out with his Orac and having a look through the boxes of bits last night I couldn't find the choke. Did you manage to source another one or has anyone got one going spare?

Cheers

Re: New Triac Retrofit

Finally made a start on stripping the Triac last night ready to move the electronics into a new enclosure. A quick question for those who have retrofitted. The step and dir pin wiring is easy enough but what have you done with the Fault, boost and energise signal lines? Energise can presumably be ig...

Re: New Triac Retrofit

Cheers guys

Tom - glad you got the Orac sensor working. Have you reused the 'datum' and spindle speed sensor on the Triac? Looking at the wiring diagrams it looks like you could recreat the simple transistor circuit on the original main board.

New Triac Retrofit

Well it's a while since I've last been on here! Quite a few of you may remember my adventures refitting my starturn 4 about 4 years ago and it's good to see that so many other people are still retrofitting and keeping these fantastic machines going. So why am I here? Well as of Friday I became the p...

Starturn 4 for Sale

Hello

Long time since I've been on the forum. Decided it's time for a bit of a clearout so I've decided to sell one of my spare Starturn 4 lathes. This machine is ripe for a retrofit with some modern software.
